Uganda weather around Queen Elizabeth National Park
Uganda does not have one climate. Rain is spread differently across the regions, so a national average does not tell you much about the west. The park lies on the equator, at about 910 m on the Lake Edward shore and 1,350 m at the Katwe crater. Rain, more than temperature, shapes the travel seasons.
The big rains fall from March to May and from September to December. The gaps between them are the drier stretches, roughly June to August and January to February. Rain can still arrive at any time of year, so the dry months are a better chance, not a promise.

Best time to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park
A rough guide by period. Use it to choose, then check the forecast before you travel.
| Period | What to expect | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| January to February | Outside the main rains | Safaris; the Rwenzori in January |
| March to May | First main rainy season | Flexible plans and a reserve day |
| June to August | Outside the main rains; June to July is also the drier window for the Rwenzori | Safaris and mountain treks |
| September to December | Second main rainy season; 2026 is expected to bring normal to above-normal rain in most areas | Flexible plans; check the road to Kasese |
For most travelers who can choose, June to August or January to February give the better odds of drier days. If you travel in the rainy months, build in a spare day and keep your route flexible.
Choosing a month by trip type
A safari and boat trip only
The stretches outside the main rains are the safer bet. Keep one day free in case a road or a plan changes.
A Rwenzori trek
Choose January or June to July, the drier months. Mist, rain and night frost are still possible, so pack for them. See Rwenzori Mountains.
A trip that includes Kasese
In the September to December rains, ask about road conditions around Kasese before you set out, and leave a buffer before any flight. See getting there.

Queen Elizabeth National Park weather: what changes on the ground
Rain affects the trip more than the thermometer does.
Roads and tracks
Heavy rain can make journeys slower and disrupt traffic. In the rainy months of September to December 2026, low areas in Kasese and other western districts may flood and traffic may be disrupted. That does not mean a road is closed. Ask your driver or host for the current state. See Kasese for more.
Game drives and boat trips
Plan the longer transfers for the days you have spare. Park gates are open 07:00 to 19:00. Check the current hours before a late arrival. The safari guide explains the drive options.
The mountains
In the Rwenzori, rain and mist are possible all year, and nights bring frost at altitude. Do not read the weather of the lowlands as the weather on the mountain. Details are on the Rwenzori Mountains page.
Pack for both
Pack a rain layer for the lowlands and warm clothing for any time in the mountains. A shower can pass at any time of year.
Check the forecast for your dates
Use the rain seasons above to choose your month. If a specific day matters, such as a boat trip or a long transfer, look at the forecast a few days before and keep your plan flexible.
